Spectrum celebrates the expressive possibilities of color and its ability to shape emotion, memory, and perception. Bringing together four contemporary artists with distinct approaches to realism, the exhibition explores color as both subject and language. Through luminous florals, meticulously rendered collections, immersive abstractions drawn from nature, and iconic American imagery, these artists reveal how color can transform the familiar into something extraordinary.
MARIE CAMERON
Marie Cameron's new Curio Cabinet series places birds and teacups within curiosity cabinets filled with specimens, artifacts, collectibles, and kitsch, all woven together through narratives of courtship, desire, obsession, life, and death. Rendered with exquisite realism, these richly detailed compositions bring together treasured objects, natural specimens, and personal artifacts in carefully orchestrated arrangements. Each painting is organized around a dominant color palette, creating visual harmonies that invite contemplation and evoke memory. Through these intimate cabinet worlds, Cameron transforms ordinary objects into poetic narratives that reflect our enduring desire to collect, preserve, and find meaning in the things we cherish.
GARY BUKOVNIK
Internationally acclaimed watercolorist Gary Bukovnik has devoted his career to celebrating the beauty, abundance, and vitality of the natural world. Renowned for his exuberant floral paintings, Bukovnik's works possess a remarkable sensuality and expressive brilliance, transforming flowers into powerful meditations on color, light, and life itself.
A celebrated figure in California art, Bukovnik has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. For many years, his paintings were prominently featured at Davies Symphony Hall through his longstanding association with the San Francisco Symphony, introducing his work to generations of visitors and collectors. His paintings are held in numerous public and private collections internationally and continue to captivate audiences with their joy, generosity, and unmistakable command of watercolor
DANZA DAVIS
Danza Davis creates vivid, immersive paintings inspired by the complexity and wonder of the natural world. Raised in rural Northern California, she developed an early fascination with ecological forms and systems, a curiosity that continues to inform her artistic practice. Working on large-scale canvases populated by bold, repeating forms, Davis explores the dynamic relationships between color, pattern, and perception.
Holding degrees in both botany and studio art, Davis brings scientific understanding and visual sensitivity to her work. Her paintings evoke both the wonder of a kaleidoscope and the intensity of close observation in nature, resulting in compositions that are exuberant, intelligent, and deeply attuned to the living world. One featured work is mounted on a custom rotating mechanism, allowing viewers to alter its orientation with the turn of a handle and experience the painting from multiple perspectives.
TERRY THOMPSON
Terry Thompson's hyperrealist paintings focus on vintage neon signs that once defined the visual character of Western cities and now stand as enduring symbols of a changing America. Through careful observation and masterful oil painting, Thompson reveals the sculptural beauty and emotional resonance of these illuminated landmarks.
Drawn to subjects often overlooked, Thompson also depicts iconic consumer products whose typography and graphic design have become embedded in our collective visual memory. Rendered with extraordinary precision and sensitivity, these works elevate familiar objects into thoughtful reflections on nostalgia, place, and contemporary life. Spectrum includes four newly completed paintings by the artist.
